Rod, thank you for the correction. I just couldn’t contain myself of that sentence, cause every time I hear: «London is the capital of Great Britain», it makes me smile since every Russian pupil knows it by heart and no matter about his/her English level. I smile not because of incorrect definition but ..if you drag smb. out of the hay in Russia in the dead of night and ask: «What is the capital of Great Britain?», (I give 99%) you’ll get: «London is the capital of Great Britain» verbatim…)) of course you could also hear: «What are you doing in my bedroom with your questions?» and such like stuff (1%). )))))
Of course I understand the difference: the full name of the country is - United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, for it consists of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Great Britain is the name of the island, consists of three autonomous regions: England, Wales and Scotland. Therefore: the U.K. includes England (part of Great Britain), Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. I remember this information from school geography lessons.
