Well now, that is excellent, Poseidon; I had to consult my dictionary on comminute ; it is an entirely new word for me. While triturate is familiar from chemistry , it is not a word I often employ in my speech! You have taught me a new word, essentially, and reminded me of another I can now use!

Rapprochement is a very difficult English word to work with, possibly because in English we restrict its meaning more narrowly than in French! As in: Russia and the US have reached rapprochement ; in effect, they have reached: syn.: reconcilliation, reaccordance, concordance, realignment, entente, detente, recordiality.

Well, eksena , I will give useful comments , but they will not be authoritative: fuddle, I have never heard; absorb is possible, but I have never used it or heard it used; toast usually involves an alcoholic beverage; sup usually pertains to food rather than drink...but could include a beverage; quaff is a good one that I tried to think of, but could not bring to mind; knock back is probably most likely used in Britain...rather colorful; pull on sounds strange for this purpose to me. You did some research to come up with all of theses contenders as synonyms for to drink! Most impressive effort!

I did some research, which is of no difficulty due to the Internet, and I found a number of words that I've never met before: either in books or in fims; as well as a number of words that I by no means consider possible synonyms to "drink".

As I'm not a native speaker I wish to get into the theme))) I admit that Am.E & Br.E are not the same, so it becomes more urgent to know them both)))

As for "fuddle" - it's British informal, a kind of a synonym to "guzzle", means "if something, especially alcohol or drugs, fuddles you or your mind, it makes you unable to think clearly" (Longman Dictionary of Contemprorary English)
also "fuddle" AmE - to make drunk; intoxicate, to drink; tipple (the American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition)
Though I should admit that the word usage provided by a native speaker and the best dictionary is not of equal value)) as dictionaries are getting out-of-date long before they're printed)))

"Absorb" can be used in this way:
These plants drink much water.
These plants absorb much water.
(at least as I can make it out from dictionaries and common sense)))

As for "knock back" & "pull on" - they're phrasal verbs and that's the matter))) You can hardly imagine what mysterious power it can have on non-natives. All courses, text-books and tests are full of phrasal verbs of all kinds and types (though I suspect that these phrasal verbs are used rather variously in different parts of the UK)) Still, we have to know them all)))) even if the only place we can use them is a test)))

Nevertheless, I'm really grateful to you for your comments as they're very helpful - one should not only pass a test but also wants to communicate in English (unfortunately, it's not obviously the same)

Oh my, eksena , I fell prey to a very common error in English usage...I did not mean to do so: I used a homonym peeling when I should have used pealing! they are pronounced the same, mean different things and are spelled differently! I wonder if homonyms might not be a good exercise for us, after synonyms? Homonyms are tricky and trip up rather experienced speakers..as you can see! What do you think, eksena, from your professional perspective about an exercise in homonyms..would it be educational?

Eksena, please come to my rescue, I do not have an English grammar book to refer to so must ask for your professional opinion. Am I using the correct word in saying homonym for peel and peal? I Googled homonym and it is a word that is spelled the same, pronounced the same and yet has a different meaning: ex. stalk . What does one then call peel and peal? I did some more research, eksena, and determined that words that sound alike such as peel and peal are homophones: this indicates to me that homophones are the parent group under which homonyms fall. I determined that homophones may or may not be spelled the same way; homonyms are spelled the same. So, in my original comment that I had used a homonym, I should correctly have stated that I had used a homophone! Now, my question as restated becomes: What do you think , from your professional perspective, about the value of an exercise in homophones?

As for me, I'd prefer using "homophones" quite often as the aim is to introduce the idea of the same pronunciation with diffferent meanings (we don't spek about spelling much - at least at this level), "homographs" are used to introduce the idea of similar spelling and different meaning. Actually, "homophones" & "homographs" are the two sides of the same medal - "homonym" that can be rendered as "having the same name" (as you know, the names are the same either in writing or pronunciation, though they definitely mean different objects)))

Eksena, I just researced and determined that when bells were first introduced into church liturgical practice it, occurred in Western Europe around 850 a.d. The primary ringing of the bells was to apel (to call ) the faithful to church! The French verb appeler ( to call ) is obviously closely related to this middle English word, apel. Soon, bell ringing devices or racks were created to ring bells in random sequence; these racks and the bell ringing sequences were also called apels or peals. In time the sounding of the peals and the ringing of the bells became one and the same, pealing. Soon after, the Rossian Orthodox Church imported bells from Europe and the Russian word kolokol was introduced, as derived from the European words klocke/cloche.

A fascinating piece of information surfaced concerning ringing of bells:

Russian Orthodox church bells are stationary and the clapper is what moves to produce sound.

Western Christian bells swing as do the clappers.

This difference in attachment between the respectve Russian and Western church bells introduces an entirely different personality to the quality of the bell sounds.

I have just finished several hours more of reading about bells:

The glas of the Russian church kolokol is rhythmic and repetitious...producing a deep and haunting , resonant , sombre tone, which ties church, and the infinite Russian soul together philosophically and religiously! The ringing of Russian bells is described as an aural icon.

The voice of the Western church bell is essentially random, with the smaller bells tending to ring before the larger bells which produces a rather more melodic , musical sound, not unlike singing voices. The bells symbolize the voices of angels and link the church and people to God.
