US produced ships utilizing either an internal combustion engine or a turbine engine are rated by the horsepower delivered to the propeller shaft: this is called shaft horsepower and it is abbreviated shp. This number is a function of the engine output in horsepower and the efficiences of transmitting the engine horsepower to the shaft.

The rated shp for the Battleship Iowa is 212,000, but its engines were designed to operate so as to produce 254,000 shp if called for, for sustained periods.

The rated shp for the Ocean Liner United States is 241,785 and her engines were designed to operate at maximum shp for thousands of miles.

By contrast , the ratings in shp for two more modern ocean liners are:
SS Norway 160,000
