If an airplane travels along the equator, at an altitude of 1500 feet in an easterly direction, at a steady speed of 3,113 miles per hour, it will make one complete circumnavigation of the earth in approximately---------------hours .

Rodamer, 452 days ago 0
Very good answer! I would calculate closer to 8, but your answer is intriguing...I imagine we could chew on this some day over a beer! I know you have factored in many variables by making your statement about the clock's location!
Rodamer, 452 days ago 0
I suspect you have taken into account some acceleration boost imparted by the earth's rotation in an easterly direction and associated prevailing winds, which theoretically (although the lower atmosphere rotates essentially with the earth at 1,000 linear miles per hour at the equator) would give some percentage advantage in travelling eastward , rather than westward! I suspect you would estimate 9 hours to travel the same distance and at the same average speed in a westerly direction?
Poseidon, 452 days ago 0
Rod, I took a nautical mile. The concept 'mile' is too various. I think metric system would be more exact and convenient.
In this case:
The airplane speed is 3,113 m.p.h. = 3,113 x 1.852 = 5765,276 km/h
The length of equator is 40,000 km. (R = 6,371 km; 6,371 x 2 x 3.14 = 40,009 km)
40,000 / 5765,276 = 6,938 hours
Rodamer, 452 days ago 0
We are going to have a very amicable mathematical discussion, Poseidon, my friend!
I want to restate your equation:
The airplane speed is 3,113 mph= 3,113 x 1.60934= 5,009.9 kph
The length of the equator is 24,902 mi x 1.60934= 40,075 km
40,075 / 5,009.9 = 7.999 hours

New: Lieutenant Kije is a fictitious officer in a Russian____________.
Poseidon, 300 days ago +1
Lieutenant Kije is a fictitious officer in a Russian Army.
Properly speaking, it is the literary character in the novel by Soviet writer Yuri Tynyanov. Its plot looks like an anecdote.
One of the emperor's servants has a lover within the court and upon having his bottom pinched shouts out loud in a way that is misinterpreted as a cry for a "guard" by the emperor. The emperor is furious and summons the court to ask who has dared to cry out "guard" within his castle. No-one can give him an answer and so the emperor remains distressed about the incident. Meanwhile the servant in question escapes the emperor's chambers to be caught by his uncle and summoned to collect the guard duties for the day. The name Kijé (and subsequent character) is based on a Russian grammatical discrepancy made by another servant who is copying out the guard duties, reading "Подпоручики же…" ("podporuchiki zhe", "the lieutenants, however…") as "Подпоручик Киже…" ("Podporuchik Kijé", "lieutenant Kijé") instead, thus creating a new name "Kijé". Upon an immediate order of receipt of the guard duties by the emperor the spelling mistake is not corrected and the servant (whose bottom was pinched) has to report the documented duties to the emperor. The servant's uncle takes the opportunity of the spelling mistake to invent a character to blame: "Kijé". The Emperor assigns Kijé to guard duty. When an advisor identifies the one who shouted "Help!" under the Emperor's window one night as Kijé, the lieutenant is flogged and marched off to Siberia. A maid-in-waiting is distressed to hear that her lover has been exiled, so the Emperor reinstates Lt. Kijé and has him marry her. They have a child, and Kijé steadily rises through the ranks. The Emperor finally summons General Kijé to receive appropriate decorations; but, before this can happen, the general is "killed in battle" and is buried with full military honors, receiving his medals posthumously.

New: The capital of The United Kingdom is _________.
tyuu, 236 days ago +4
Rod, thank you for the correction. I just couldn’t contain myself of that sentence, cause every time I hear: «London is the capital of Great Britain», it makes me smile since every Russian pupil knows it by heart and no matter about his/her English level. I smile not because of incorrect definition but ..if you drag smb. out of the hay in Russia in the dead of night and ask: «What is the capital of Great Britain?», (I give 99%) you’ll get: «London is the capital of Great Britain» verbatim…)) of course you could also hear: «What are you doing in my bedroom with your questions?» and such like stuff (1%). )))))
Of course I understand the difference: the full name of the country is - United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, for it consists of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Great Britain is the name of the island, consists of three autonomous regions: England, Wales and Scotland. Therefore: the U.K. includes England (part of Great Britain), Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. I remember this information from school geography lessons.

Poseidon, 178 days ago 0
You see, little_baby, there were at least 26 treaties of Paris in history, from 1229 till 1973. Many of them were immortalized by group portraits. That is why I ask you kindly to specify which of them you mean.
tyuu, 178 days ago +2
Yes, l_b... Po is absolutely right, there were many Treaties of Paris in history. Just specify a year :)
For instance, in 1919 the Irish portrait painter William Orpen became the official artist of the Paris Peace Conference (1919).

Vice-admiral Makarov also initiated the Russian arctic expeditions, having overseen the Ermak icebreaker's construction, on which he travelled to the Arctic in 1899 and 1901. At the beginning of the Russian-Japanese War of 1904-05, he was appointed commander of the battleship Petropavlovsk which was blocked at Port Arthur.

You probably expected 'Russian Pacific Fleet' but I have chosen 'battleship Petropavlovsk'.

tyuu, 177 days ago 0
Yes, Po, I was thinking of 'Russian Pacific Fleet'.. but I like your choice!!
Rodamer, 174 days ago 0
I have researched Admiral Makarov , but unfortunately can not find anything concerning ballast systems written in English to complete this sentence ending.
Poseidon, 173 days ago 0
Rod, you were on the right way, nevertheless!
I have a book about the very famous naval commanders of Russia. And еру article about Makarov’s merits contains abovementioned information. I looked into the ‘floodability’ Russian page of Wikipedia; there is Makarov’s name mentioned. On the English page his name takes place too but in less extent.

Po, you never fail just because you do not think precisely as my mind does..it is just an example of the diversity of the trained speaker's choices when speaking English! I applaud your response!
Rod
Rodamer, 155 days ago +1
I believe what I replied earlier is : one goes to bed with a lamb and rises/awakens with a lion in his stead; this is my choice, since in US we say a similar expression 'March comes in like a lamb and goes out like a lion'.

Po, I must have mistakenly removed the above reply when I responded to your subsequent remark..sorry!

It is rather important to know and employ good English grammar; however, it is still possible to speak and be __________ merely by stumbling about awkwardly.

Note: English is very forgiving and English speaking people are extremely flexible with their ears...not so those who speak French! I find myself wondering how forgiving Russian and Russian speakers are by comparison?????
Poseidon, 158 days ago +1
It is rather important to know and employ good English grammar; however, it is still possible to speak and be understood merely by stumbling about awkwardly.

Note: I think English has stricter word order in sentence as compared to Russian. You Rod probably noticed that we Russian often make mistakes tied with consecution.

I am still waiting for doing the logical endings to my sentence above.
Rodamer, 155 days ago 0
See above and below!
Rodamer, 155 days ago +1
Yes, I do notice such a phenomenon occasionally with the order of words as written in English by Russians and also the unusual usage or complete omission of articles such as a, an , the. This does not render such sentences unintelligible, just a bit quaint/Russian:) The bizarre thing about this is that English speakers also occasionally omit articles; but, we usually know when it is permissible/required to do so! English is very irregular in form and this is why a person born to the English language has a tremendous advantage over many others who learn it as a second language. Not to worry, Po, you are improving with noticeable and dramatic strides! You have become a fine second language English speaker. I believe you may be beginning to think in English, my good Russian friend:)
Rodamer, 155 days ago 0
See above , Po , I must have inadvertently erased it when submitting my subsequent reply to you.
Poseidon, 152 days ago 0
Actually: Go to bed with the lamb and rise with the lark.

Thank you!
