what do u think about rule number 2? :)))))))))))
eksena, 364 days ago +1
Personally, I love it ))).

Learning rules would never lead to fluent speaking, it's obvious.

One should acquire grammar through the context. This technique also include drills (as a part, as practice, not as the aim of the lesson ;))

When one was a little child starting to speak nobody told him/her to decline nouns. Still, it's considered to be a matter of literacy/illiteracy to know rules for a grown-up.

Not a single ESL teacher is against grammar :)) The whole trick is in methodology.

So, listen to the second rule and DO NOT LEARN THE RULES, just use them (see rule No 1)

If there is no such oportunity, then talk to yourself and answer yourself! I do this with French all of the time, because there are few people around who can get beyond bonjour or comment-allez vous? I also get on sites where I must communicate with Canadians and French people and am obliged to write in French.

Speaking is considered by so many people to be the top of the language command. At least it's the most vivid sign of the learning success. So, it looks quite natural that students of all ages and levels are longing to speak leaving other skills unmastered. Apparently, no one would boast of his high-level language knowledge because he can listen or write perfectly. However, my personal experience in language learning is that listening and writing skills turn out to be the most neglected by students as well as by most teachers.

What should a student do to master his target language?
First and foremost, lots of 'boring' work: grammar drills, vocabulary study, pronunciation exercises, phrasal verbs and idioms practice, prepositions and modal verbs mastering, listening tests, creative writing, all kinds of reading:skimming, scanning, extensive, intensive, loud, silent reading; etc. etc. ect. There are so many course books and cd-roms nowadays!

As for pure speaking practice, one can't say there's no opportunity - the Internet, and Skype in particular, give you lots of speaking opportunities. Though I fail to get the idea of such speaking since no one is going to correct your mistakes.

Sometimes I think in English. I ask myself and answer those questions in English. It may seem to be funny but I think this is not a harmful thing. Do it try!

You can practice in sentence constracting on some forums, like this. To practice your pronunciation skills you can try some skype or phone courses. As for me, I 've been abroad 3 times this year. I try to communicate with people in different countries during the trip :)

There are few such places called "English clubs" (at least in Moscow) where you can come and just speak English. It's mostly Russians who come but still very useful.

eksena, 328 days ago +1
I have been learning English since childhood and I am still learning it now) Actually, it's very interesting and not hard. Sometimes it takes time to understand a rule, and one should be patient to overcome all the difficulties.
Attending courses is a good idea, it'll certainly enlarge your knowledge. And don't forget, you have this site for practice)
So, welcome to our discussions and games)
